The Delhi Directorate of Education (DoE) issued a directive on Tuesday to the heads of National Institutes of Open Schooling (NIOS) to ensure the delivery of quality education and the creation of a conducive learning environment for students.
The circular outlined several key areas of focus to improve the student experience, including providing essential facilities like libraries, computer labs, physical education, and remedial classes for students struggling with the curriculum. It also stressed the importance of regular assessments to track academic progress. The DoE emphasized that students should attend morning assemblies and that centres must closely monitor attendance, taking timely actions against absenteeism. In cases of repeated absenteeism, parents should be informed to address the issue promptly.
Currently, the NIOS Project Branch operates 75 study centres, serving 7,794 students enrolled for the 2024-25 academic session. The directive requires that all NIOS heads ensure the provision of quality education and maintain a supportive and motivating atmosphere for students, fostering both academic and personal growth.
The DoE also encouraged NIOS centres to publicly display student progress reports on notice boards, recognizing students for perfect attendance and academic excellence by awarding certificates. This aims to boost motivation and celebrate student achievements, creating a positive and rewarding environment.
Teachers’ performance is another focus of the circular, with a clear emphasis on accountability. It specified that if a teacher’s results do not show improvement, their services should be terminated. Heads were instructed to issue a show-cause notice to any teacher whose performance fails to meet the required standards, asking them to justify why their services should not be terminated. This ensures that students receive high-quality education from capable and effective teachers.
In addition to these measures, the circular requires NIOS heads to ensure that class schedules are followed punctually and that centres maintain adequate infrastructure and clean facilities. In the absence of guest teachers, regular school faculty are to be deployed to teach NIOS students for at least three periods a week. This ensures that students’ learning continues uninterrupted and meets the required educational standards.
Through these measures, the DoE aims to ensure that NIOS centres provide an optimal learning experience that promotes academic achievement, discipline, and overall student well-being.
