The Delhi Police revealed on Tuesday that a Class-12 student arrested for sending bomb threats to over 400 schools in the city is connected to an NGO with ties to a political party.
Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Madhup Tewari disclosed that during their investigation, it was discovered that the NGO had previously voiced support for Afzal Guru, the convict in the 2001 Parliament attack.
Tewari explained that tracking the threats was challenging due to the use of a virtual private network (VPN), which obscured the origin of the emails. “We had to ascertain whether there was a terror angle,” he said. The police faced difficulties accessing information from service providers due to the VPN’s encryption.
The breakthrough came after the minor sent another threatening email on January 8. Police then traced the student’s activity and seized his laptop and mobile phone for forensic analysis.
In total, the student had sent 400 bomb threat emails. During the investigation, police also examined the background of his father, who works for the NGO. They found that the organization, part of a civil society group, has raised issues concerning Afzal Guru’s execution and is involved with a political party.
Although the political party has not been named, the police have indicated that the investigation is ongoing.
