Overview

Delhi Public School, Bhilai is a coeducational day cum boarding school affiliated with the CBSE board, New Delhi. It is part of the reputed Delhi Public School Society (estb. 1949) which runs 140 Delhi Public Schools countrywide. DPS, Bhilai was promoted as a joint venture between the DPS society and the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) on August, 20, 1985. BSP provided 16 acres of land for the school along with other infrastructure support at the time of its foundation.

The co-educational school enrolls 5,212 students from nursery to class XII, taught by 195 teachers. Affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, DPS Bhilai aims to ‘develop sensitivity towards the environment among its students, and induce feelings of communal harmony and patriotism.’ The school’s motto is ‘Service before Self’ and encourages students to serve others ‘selflessly, willingly and graciously.’

Campus

DPS Bhilai is sited on the forest avenue of Bhilai township and has two campuses, the junior school at Maroda Sector, and the senior school building at Risali Sector. While the junior school consists of the pre-primary and primary wings, the Risali sector school comprises of the middle, secondary and senior secondary classes, the sports complex, boys and girls hostel and a few staff quarters. The administrative wing and the multipurpose hall are also part of the Risali sector campus.

Spacious fields facilitate outdoor games at the junior school where children from the primary wing learn aerobics, rhythmic exercises, yoga, etc. There are rooms for indoor games like Carrom, Chess, Ludo etc. The primary wing has a state-of-the-art auditorium for various programs and competitions and can accommodate more than 500 people.

Two computer labs in the primary wing have 45 desktops each for the pre-primary and primary sections. The Maths Lab helps students from class II to V learn concepts better. The primary wing also boasts of a high-tech Audio-Visual room and a huge playroom stocked with toys and games for 695 students of classes nursery and prep.

The senior wing at the Risali sector not only has physics, chemistry, and biology laboratories, but also houses laboratories for geography, maths, languages, biotechnology and home science. Full-fledged computer labs are available to students with the latest upgrades.

The Risali sector sports complex offers ample opportunity for play and practice with two tennis courts, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, twin indoor swimming pools and a modern gymnasium for its students.

A notable feature at DPS Bhilai is a vast multipurpose hall at the Risali campus that can seat at least 2,000 people and contains five Badminton courts that can host many inter-house and inter-school championships. A well-furnished conference room with a seating capacity of 120 people allows meetings and exhibitions to take place.

Academics

DPS Bhilai is a co-educational, English medium school affiliated to the CBSE board, New Delhi. It offers classes from nursery to XII. Subjects like science are not just taught using textbooks but through demonstrations at the Demonstration Lab, and at the other labs. Teachers use a hands-on approach, and challenge students to understand and apply what they learn.

Admission

Admissions are open to nursery and classes IX and XI. Online registration for admission can be done at http://www.portal.dpsbhilai.in Only online registration is accepted. It is usually open in January.

Fees

The fee structure at DPS Bhilai varies for a BSP employee’s child and a non-BSP child. While admission fee, building fund and caution deposit costs Rs.15,000 for a BSP employee’s child, it costs Rs.30,000 for a non-BSP child. The monthly tuition fee for nursery is Rs.1020 for a BSP child and Rs.1800 for a non-BSP child. Annual charges include development charges (Rs. 3400-Rs. 5350), activity charges (Rs 500) and subjective laboratory usage charges.

Hostel fees amount to approximately Rs. 82,400 per annum.

Achievement

DPS Bhilai was adjudged ‘India’s First Ranked Day School’ in Chhattisgarh for the third consecutive time on the parameter of Academic Reputation with a score of 93/100 in the EducationWorld India School Rankings 2012.

In 2010, the school principal M.P. Yadav was also conferred with the prestigious ‘National Award to Teachers (NAT) 2009’, and the esteemed ‘Rajya Shikshak Samman Smriti Puraskar 2011.’ He has also been the honored recipient of ‘CBSE Award to Teachers 2005’.

The school is also the winner of the 1st Computer Literacy Excellence Awards for Schools 2002, and was awarded with Rs. 1 lakh as a cash prize by the IT Ministry, Govt. of India.

Accommodation

The school provides hostel facility on the campus for outstation students- both boys and girls- with a total capacity of 138. Two separate buildings for boys and girls hostels with a common dining hall caters to each and every need of the students viz. Central air-cooling and water coolers in the summer and solar heaters and geysers in winter. Pure vegetarian delicacies are served and the recreation room provides a place for relaxation after a day long hard work. The disciplined and caring touch of the wardens ensure that students achieve academic excellence with optimum focus.

The principal’s residence located near the hostel and the wardens residence in the hostel building furthers the security and safety of the students.
