If proposed revisions to the first-year syllabus are approved by Delhi University’s Executive Council, MA Urdu students will soon study couplets by the mystic poet and saint Kabir Das.
Officials stated that in the first semester, students will learn a selection of 40 couplets from ‘Kabir Bani’ as part of the revisions suggested by the Faculty of Arts. Two readings, “Kabir Bani” by Ali Sardar Jafri and “Kabir” by Prabhakar Manchve, are proposed to be included in the first-year syllabus.
If approved, the changes will take effect in the 2024-25 academic session, starting in August. These revisions are recommended for the syllabus of the “Basic Text: Early Urdu Literature” paper taught in the Department of Urdu. The Faculty of Arts decided on these changes during a meeting on February 19, and they are now awaiting approval from the Executive Council, which will convene on July 27.
The goal of this move, according to the Department of Urdu’s programme brochure, is to introduce students to early literary traditions of the Deccan and North India. Upon completing the course, students will be able to understand and appreciate classical poetry and prose within the context of early Urdu literary traditions.
Under the proposed revisions, first-year students will start their coursework with “Kabir Ke Muntakhab Dohe,” a selection of 40 couplets from Kabir Bani, which will be included in Unit 1. Previously, students studied “Sub-Ras” by Mulla Wajhi (first half) in this unit.
These revisions were approved by DU’s Academic Council during their meeting on July 12.
