DU accuses St. Stephen’s College of exceeding sanctioned seats for Christian candidates

September 3, 2024

On Monday, Delhi University accused St. Stephen’s College of exceeding the sanctioned quota for Christian candidates in its revised seat allocation list. The university also noted that some seats in BA courses were left vacant despite having CUET-qualified candidates.

DU’s initial review of the list from St. Stephen’s College revealed “crucial and alarming aspects” that halted further allocation. According to the notice, popular programs like B.Sc (H) Chemistry and B.Sc (H) Physics had vacant seats despite the presence of qualified candidates.

St. Stephen’s College Principal John Varghese had not yet responded to the allegations at the time of the notice. The college had initially submitted a list of shortlisted candidates on August 28, but it lacked specific details for BA program combinations, which hindered the allocation process.

A revised list was submitted on August 31, but it still contained discrepancies. Some BA program combinations had no allocated seats, while others had more seats than sanctioned for Christian candidates. Additionally, the notice highlighted that seats in high-demand programs like B.Sc (H) Chemistry and B.Sc (H) Physics remained vacant despite qualified candidates being available.

DU is continuing to validate the revised lists and resolve the discrepancies. The notice also provided information about the allocation of Christian candidates at Jesus and Mary College, another minority institution. Candidates have until September 4 at 4:59 pm to accept their allocations, after which colleges will verify and approve online applications until September 5 at 4:59 pm. The final date for submitting online fees is September 6 at 4:59 pm.
