DU colleges to offer courses in East Asian languages

October 13, 2024

Three Delhi University colleges—Ramjas, Hansraj, and Ram Lal Anand—are preparing to introduce advanced diploma and certification programs in East Asian languages, including Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. The proposal, which will be reviewed by the Academic Council on October 10, seeks to enhance the university’s linguistic offerings and provide students with essential language skills for today’s globalized job market.

Ramjas will offer an Advanced Diploma in Korean, while Hansraj plans to introduce a Certificate Course in Chinese, along with diploma courses in Korean and Japanese. Meanwhile, Ram Lal Anand College will provide Advanced Diplomas in both Chinese and Japanese. These courses will be available through the Department of East Asian Studies, reflecting a growing interest in East Asian languages among students.

The decision to expand language programs comes after recommendations from the Faculty of Social Sciences, which recognized the importance of equipping students with diverse language skills to meet the demands of various career paths. Delhi University already has dedicated departments for several foreign languages, and this addition will further strengthen its offerings, preparing students for roles in fields like international relations, business, and cultural studies.

With the rise of global interconnectedness, proficiency in East Asian languages is increasingly seen as a valuable asset. This initiative not only aims to enhance academic opportunities but also encourages cultural understanding and collaboration in an ever-evolving world.
