Delhi University (DU) plans to introduce a PhD programme in Hindu Studies starting the 2025-26 academic session, as recommended by the Governing Body of the Centre for Hindu Studies.
The initiative, initially intended for the current academic year, was deferred and is now slated for the upcoming session, according to a proposal by the Standing Committee.
“The PhD in Hindu Studies aims to create research opportunities for students eager to explore this field,” said Prerna Malhotra, Joint Director of the Centre for Hindu Studies. “Many students, especially those with JRF and NET qualifications in Hindu Studies, have shown interest. As a premier institution, DU is committed to fostering research in diverse areas of Hindu Studies,” she added.
The programme will initially offer 10 seats, including those under reservation and supernumerary categories, with the possibility of increasing capacity based on infrastructure and academic needs.
The Academic Council will review the proposal on December 27, after which it will be sent to the Executive Council, DU’s highest decision-making body, for final approval.
Eligibility will require a Master’s degree in Hindu Studies or allied subjects with a minimum of 55% marks, along with JRF/NET qualification or success in the university’s PhD eligibility test. Reserved category candidates will receive applicable relaxations per the PhD Information Bulletin.
Until permanent faculty appointments are made, research supervision will be undertaken by experts from allied departments and colleges who have expressed interest in guiding PhD scholars.
The Centre for Hindu Studies, established in 2023 with a focus on Brahmanical texts, currently offers a two-year Master’s programme. Its first MA batch commenced in November 2023.
