Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh affirmed that the university will maintain affiliation with the 12 colleges fully funded by the Delhi government, despite the AAP-led government’s demand for their inclusion in state universities.
The response comes after Delhi Education Minister Atishi, in a December letter to the Centre, raised concerns about alleged financial irregularities in these colleges. Singh stated, “We are committed to our stand,” expressing hope for continued financial support from the Delhi government for the sake of students.
In reply, Atishi emphasized a special audit report revealing significant irregularities in expenditure exceeding hundreds of crores, calling for accountability from the Delhi government. She insisted that funding would continue only if the colleges affiliated with state universities. Atishi underscored that only Delhi University has the authority to address these issues.
Despite Atishi’s concerns, Singh requested the withdrawal of her letter to the Union Education Minister and urged the minister to sustain funding for the 12 colleges. Singh argued that de-affiliation is not possible as these colleges are constituents of the University of Delhi under the Delhi University Act 1922.
The Delhi government later announced its decision not to release funding for the 12 colleges for the academic year 2024-25 unless they are transferred entirely under the state. Singh’s plea emphasized the impo
rtance of continuity in funding for the colleges in the students’ interest.
The dispute highlights the complex issues surrounding funding, governance, and affiliation between Delhi University and the Delhi government, prompting the need for a resolution to ensure the uninterrupted education of students.
