On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the urgency of implementing an education system grounded in Indian values. Speaking virtually at an event commemorating the 200th birth anniversary of Arya Samaj founder Swami Dayanand Saraswati in Tankara, Gujarat’s Morbi district, Modi praised the social reformer for advocating a return to the Vedas during a period of societal enslavement and widespread superstitions.

Modi asserted that an education system aligned with Indian values is crucial, highlighting the role of Arya Samaj schools as centers for this philosophy. He pointed out that the National Education Policy is now expanding on these principles, and he urged society to actively engage in these educational efforts.

Swami Dayanand Saraswati, born during a time of Indian subjugation and societal issues, played a crucial role in challenging prevailing orthodoxies and superstitions. Modi underscored how Dayanand Saraswati exposed these social ills, emphasizing the need to reconnect with the Vedas in the face of cultural and spiritual drift.

Describing Swami Dayanand as a global sage and a sage of national consciousness, Modi highlighted the impact of his teachings during a period when British rulers used social evils to justify their rule. Dayanand Saraswati’s logical explanations of the Vedas, attacks on orthodoxy stereotypes, and elucidation of Indian philosophy instilled confidence and revived interest in Vedic teachings.

Modi urged the Arya Samaj, which oversees over 2,500 schools, colleges, and universities globally, to play an active role in nation-building in the current decade. He expressed a commitment to strengthening the Dayanand Anglo Vedic (DAV) institution, an embodiment of Maharshi Dayanand’s memory and inspiration.

Recognizing Swami Dayanand’s advocacy for women’s rights, Modi commended recent policies promoting women’s participation and reservation in legislative bodies. He encouraged students within the DAV educational network to engage with ‘Mera Yuva Bharat,’ an autonomous body focusing on youth affairs.

Modi expressed his gratitude for being born in Gujarat, Swami Dayanand’s birthplace, and emphasized the influence of Haryana, where he has worked extensively, referring to it as his “karmabhoomi” (land of action).
