The prestigious AFS BP Global STEM Academies Program 2023 unfolded its wings at The Emerald Heights International School in India, setting the stage for a transformative educational journey. This exceptional program, held from July 18 to August 12, 2023, was an unparalleled opportunity for cross-cultural exchange, STEM exploration, and personal growth.
The AFS BP Global STEM Academies Program welcomed a cohort of 28 outstanding students, representing 12 nationalities: Brazil, Azerbaijan, Egypt, the United Kingdom (UK), the United States of America (USA), Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Hungary, and South Africa. This diverse group of young scholars converged at The Emerald Heights International School, making it a global hub for STEM education.
The program’s core mission was to fuse the realms of science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and global competencies. It went beyond traditional classroom learning to embrace experiential education, language acquisition, adaptability, problem-solving, collaboration, and intercultural learning.
Throughout this remarkable journey, students embarked on an array of immersive experiences that broadened their horizons and enriched their minds:
Choithram Netralaya – Eye Hospital:
AFS scholars ventured into the world of eye health. They engaged in an informative session, delving into the intricacies of ocular anatomy and rare eye conditions. A guided tour of the hospital allowed them to explore various departments, witness diagnostic processes, and comprehend the advanced technology employed in eye care. The pinnacle of the visit was the opportunity to observe a live eye surgery, offering an unparalleled insight into the significance of vision and medical advancements.
Force Motors – Automobile Manufacturing Plant:
The students delved into the dynamic world of automotive technology. They had the privilege of exploring cutting-edge innovations, including the Monobus and Urbania models, designed for sustainable urban mobility. Students witnessed the meticulous assembly process, gaining a profound understanding of how sustainable transportation solutions are shaping the future. Interactions with engineers and designers fueled their curiosity, shedding light on the research and development behind these groundbreaking vehicles.
Heritage Walk in Indore:
History came alive as students embarked on a captivating heritage walk through the heart of Indore. The journey spanned approximately 4 kilometers, weaving through iconic landmarks like Rajwada, Lal Bagh Palace, and Kanch Mandir. Beyond the architectural marvels, students savored the vibrant markets, indulged in local cuisine, and engaged with friendly locals. The experience was a holistic immersion into Indore’s rich culture, history, urban planning, and diverse stories.
Lata Mangeshkar Record Museum and Indian Institute of Management (IIM):
The scholars explored two distinctive facets of Indian culture and education. At the Lata Mangeshkar Record Museum, they traced the history of Indian music and film, marveling at vintage instruments and music equipment. A visit to the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) introduced them to the realm of higher education. They engaged in an educational presentation, gaining insights into IIM’s values, courses, scholarships, international student inclusion, and extracurricular offerings.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT):
The day commenced with an orientation session with Prof. Joshi, Director of IIT, and esteemed colleagues. An overview of Indian high school education unfolded at IIT Kendriya Vidhyalaya, where students grasped the nuances of the Indian education system. A tree plantation drive added a touch of environmental stewardship to their day. The highlight was a STEM-focused tour through 10-12 laboratories across diverse departments, offering hands-on, practical STEM learning experiences.
Jimmy McGilligan Centre for Sustainable Development:
AFS scholars were introduced to sustainable technologies, eco-friendly initiatives, and environmental conservation at the Jimmy McGilligan Centre for Sustainable Development. Solar cookers, windmill projects, organic farming practices, and resourcefulness were the centerpieces of their visit. Dr. Janak Palta McGilligan, a Padma Shree Awardee, passionately shared her commitment to sustainability and zero waste. Witnessing renewable energy solutions and traditional remedies left an indelible mark on the students.
Trips to Maheshwar and Mandu:
These journeys unveiled the historical, cultural, and architectural treasures of the region. From the Ahilyabai Fort and Palace to the serene Narmada Ghat, students immersed themselves in the cultural tapestry of Maheshwar. At Mandu, they explored Rani Roopmati Mahal, Jama Masjid, and Jahaz Mahal, gaining profound insights into India’s medieval history and architectural splendors.
NATRAX – Asia’s Largest Vehicle Testing Track:
AFS students embarked on an educational voyage to NATRAX, India’s premier vehicle testing facility. They were introduced to NATRAX’s mission, history, and pivotal role in automotive research and development. The visit encompassed high-speed tests, braking tests, dynamic simulations, fatigue assessments, and noise control evaluations. This hands-on experience illuminated the significance of vehicle safety, performance, and compliance.
Waste Management Facility and Mandi Visit:
An eye-opening visit to Indore Nagar Nigam’s main waste management plant revealed the intricacies of waste collection, segregation, and recycling. In addition, students explored India’s largest “Mandi,” witnessing the journey from waste collection to recycling.
Trip to Ujjain:
The spiritual journey led students to the sacred city of Ujjain, home to the revered Mahakaleshwar temple. Amidst architectural grandeur and devotional fervor, they embraced the rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
Robotics Workshop:
An integral part of the AFS BP Global STEM Academies Program, the robotics workshop immersed students in artificial intelligence, drone technology, machine learning, and Lego Edu Robotics. From designing robots to programming them using graphical coding software, students acquired practical skills, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork. Engaging in competitions and activities like the Robology Premier League added a layer of excitement.
