NEP 2020 promises to deliver future-ready students who are more inclusive, flexible, and adept at creative thinking. As a pioneer in innovative teaching-learning, Vista International School recognises the transformative power of skill labs in realising the NEP 2020 vision. We believe that including vocational and skill training is pivotal in providing invaluable platforms for students to bridge the gap between theory and practice, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation.
Our quest to incorporate Sustainability Skill as a complement to traditional classroom learning led us to the grounds of MANUU (Maulana Azad National Urdu University). Our grade 9 and 10 students were offered a variety of courses, including plumbing, electronics, electrical engineering, civil draftsmanship, and refrigeration repair. Observing how their foray into this stimulating environment fostered a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship as a by-product, we decided to create a similar platform on our own campus.
Today, we proudly offer a range of labs designed to enhance our students’ dexterity in plumbing, electrical repairs, carpentry, and masonry. To align with the evolving educational paradigm, we have made significant investments in developing state-of-the-art skill labs equipped with cutting-edge technology and resources. Recognising the growing importance of sustainability, we have also introduced modules on pesticide-free farming and horticulture, instilling in students the fundamentals of eco-friendly practices. As part of our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we have further expanded our curriculum to include the basic installation techniques for solar panels, empowering our students to embrace sustainable energy solutions.
Much like our other endeavors, this pioneering project will continue to grow, with each passing day adding fresh chapters to its unfolding story. By next year, we envision our students exploring the fundamentals of car mechanics, tailoring, or any other craft they wish to delve into with curiosity and passion.
As a school rooted in the power of experiential learning, the decision to introduce vocational courses seamlessly aligned with our ethos. What we didn’t anticipate, however, was the remarkable passion with which our students embraced the idea. They weren’t just interested in building and repairing things; they were captivated by the notion of self-reliance. Soon, we were flooded with stories from students and parents alike, tales of students confidently fixing a faulty fuse or driving a nail into the wall with ease. These stories filled us with immense pride, but what touched us most was the deeper transformation that took place.
Our students began to develop a profound empathy for the real-life workers whose skills they were learning — a deepening respect for the craftsmanship and dedication of these tradespeople, and an appreciation for the invaluable role they play in our everyday lives. This newfound awareness made the experience even more meaningful, as they not only honed practical skills but also grew in compassion and respect for those who keep the world running behind the scenes.
In hindsight, the decision to introduce vocational courses at Vista International School has proven to be not only a step in the right direction but also a testament to our commitment as innovative educators. By fostering practical skills alongside academic rigor, we are nurturing a generation of students who are not only future-ready but also equipped with the creativity, resilience, and empathy necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing world. This initiative, rooted in experiential learning and aligned with the NEP 2020 vision, is more than just an educational endeavor; it is our contribution to the broader vision of “Viksit Bharat” — a developed and self-reliant India, built by individuals who understand the value of craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovation. As we continue to evolve, we remain committed to empowering our students with the skills and mindset needed to drive meaningful change in their lives and in the world around them.
