A 25-year-old engineering student in Maharashtra’s Nagpur allegedly murdered his parents following disagreements over his education and career, police said on Wednesday.
The accused, Utkarsh Dhakhole, committed the crime at their residence in Kapil Nagar on December 26. The incident came to light on Wednesday morning when neighbors reported a foul smell, leading to the discovery of the decomposed bodies, according to DCP (Zone V) Niketan Kadam.
The victims were identified as Liladhar Dhakhole (55), a technician at a power plant and social worker, and his wife Aruna (50), a teacher.
“Utkarsh first strangled his mother around noon on December 26. Later that day, he fatally stabbed his father when he returned home around 5 PM. He left their bodies at the house and fled,” an official said.
The initial investigation revealed that the murders were motivated by a dispute over Utkarsh’s poor academic performance. Struggling to clear several subjects in his engineering course, he reportedly clashed with his parents, who had advised him to pursue an alternative career path.
After committing the crime, Utkarsh misled his college-going sister and took her to their uncle’s home, claiming their parents had traveled to Bengaluru for a meditation program. Both siblings stayed at their uncle’s residence during this time.
The double murder came to light when neighbors alerted authorities to the foul smell emanating from the house. Utkarsh was arrested soon after and confessed to the crime during questioning, Kadam said.
Police continue to investigate the case, which has shocked the local community.
