The University of Lucknow (LU) has taken a significant step towards enhancing the quality and efficiency of its PhD evaluation process.

The LU administration has revised the PhD related processes and now, a doctoral thesis submitted by a research scholar at the university will undergo evaluation by an expert from a prestigious foreign academic institute, in addition to two Indian examiners. This move is part of LU’s efforts to align its PhD ordinance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and adhere to the University Grants Commission PhD 2022 regulations.

The revised PhD ordinance, announced by LU authorities on Friday, aims to ensure that the research conducted by PhD students at the university meets global standards of excellence. By including at least one foreign examiner, alongside an examiner and research supervisor from India, LU seeks to guarantee the recognition and accolades its research work deserves at an international level.

“The addition of a foreign examiner in the evaluation process is essential to ensure that our PhD students’ research adheres to global standards of excellence. This will undoubtedly bring laurels and recognition to the university’s research work on the international stage,” explained Prof. Poonam Tandon, the dean of academic and student welfare at LU.

To expedite the thesis evaluation process, LU plans to develop a dedicated research portal. This online platform will enable seamless completion of the entire evaluation process, from thesis submission to the viva-voce examination, within a maximum period of six months. Embracing a paperless approach, the new PhD ordinance not only saves the time and energy of the research students but also enhances transparency in the evaluation process.

Under the previous system, LU research scholars were required to submit multiple hard copies of their thesis, which were then sent to examiners through traditional postal services, resulting in significant delays. With the introduction of the new ordinance and the research portal, unnecessary paperwork and delays will be eliminated, ensuring a streamlined and efficient evaluation process.

LU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Alok Kumar Rai, expressed his satisfaction with the reforms, stating, “LU is committed to providing a world-class research environment to its students. This new PhD ordinance upholds global research standards while ensuring a highly refined and transparent evaluation process. We take pride in embracing innovation and adopting a digital mode in thesis evaluation.”

With these progressive changes, Lucknow University is poised to elevate its research ecosystem and provide its students with a conducive environment for academic excellence.
