By July 2020, the Delhi government is all set to convert all the government schools based in the capital as co-educational institutions. According to reports, the decision is part of the larger plan to address the falling performance of Delhi government school students in the class 10 board exams. Through this way, the govt also plans to boost the enrollment of students in these schools. The education department of Delhi government has issued a detailed notification in this regards.
At present, the majority of government schools in Delhi are either boys’ or girls’ schools. As per statistics shared by the Centre’s education department, only 150 out of total 1,100 approx government schools are co-ed. In addition to this, renowned government schools such as 22 Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalayas and six Schools of Excellence, run by the Delhi government are co-educational in nature. Looking at the performance of these schools, the government has planned to transform all government schools into co-educational ones.
According to further analysis by the educational department, 150 co-educational government schools based in the capital outperformed the rest. This clearly supports the case of making all the schools co-educational to promote and improve quality of school education.

In case of class X results, the gap was wider, with co-educational schools ahead of girls’ schools by over 6 percentage points and of boys’ schools by over 13 percentage points. While boys’ schools had a 74.8% pass percentage and girls’ schools had 82%, co-educational schools had 88.16%. These are the results after a large section of students cleared the compartment exams.
