The Greater Noida Police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against ten of its own personnel for the alleged assault of a Dalit law student last year, as per officials’ statements on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old student, originally from Aligarh, claimed that he was subjected to assault within a police station in November 2022 after being falsely implicated in a case.

The FIR was filed on Sunday after several months of follow-up by the complainant, who recounted the ordeal he endured at the hands of the police during an interview with PTI in June this year.

Among those named in the FIR are two station house officers, according to the police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Greater Noida) Saad Miya Khan stated, “The FIR has been registered at the Beta 2 police station under the provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.”

He added, “An inquiry into the matter has been initiated. The facts surrounding the alleged assault are under investigation. Investigations into cases filed under the SC/ST Act are required to be completed within two months,” as per Khan’s statement to PTI.

The student asserted that he had alerted the police about incidents involving illegal moral trafficking in 2021. He alleged that those connected to the trafficking operation conspired with the police to frame him and subsequently arrested him on extortion charges the following year.

The student stated that he was incarcerated for nearly two weeks in November 2022 and that he has since been seeking a fair investigation into the matter from the police.

Additionally, he shared a couple of brief videos on social media, purportedly depicting the police assaulting him. The police have indicated that the authenticity of the videos has yet to be confirmed.
