The Gujarat High Court was informed on Wednesday that the state government has taken proactive steps to combat the issue of ragging in higher and technical educational institutions by issuing a resolution. This resolution, based on guidelines from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), mandates strict compliance from these institutions to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment. Advocate General Kamal Trivedi conveyed this significant development to a division bench comprising Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Aniruddha Mayee during a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) hearing on ragging incidents in educational institutions.
The government’s resolution underscores its commitment to curbing the menace of ragging, aligning with national directives and emphasizing the importance of adherence to anti-ragging measures. Furthermore, the Gujarat education department has initiated the formation of anti-ragging committees at various levels, as outlined in the resolution dated March 19. These committees are instrumental in overseeing and enforcing the implementation of anti-ragging policies across institutions.
In response to recent incidents, including one reported in a newspaper on January 3, 2023, where three senior resident students allegedly engaged in ragging a junior student at a private medical college in Vadodara, the High Court has been actively monitoring the situation. The court’s intervention and issuance of notices to key departments have spurred further action and accountability in addressing ragging incidents.
The government’s resolution and ongoing efforts underscore its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students in educational institutions across Gujarat. By prioritizing anti-ragging initiatives and reinforcing compliance with national regulations, the state aims to create a conducive environment for learning and personal growth.
