An official announced on Sunday that six students from Afghanistan and one from East Africa have been instructed to vacate their hostel rooms at Gujarat University for overstaying. This decision follows weeks after some foreign students were attacked for offering namaz on the premises.
Following a visit from delegations from Afghanistan and Gambia, who met with the vice-chancellor to discuss safety measures after the March 16 attack, the university took action.
Vice-Chancellor Neerja Gupta stated, “Six students from Afghanistan and one from East Africa were asked to vacate their hostel rooms after they were found overstaying.”
These individuals had completed their studies but remained in the hostel due to pending administrative work.
The university has facilitated their return to their respective countries by completing the necessary paperwork and notifying the consulates. Gupta emphasized the university’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all students and informed that more than 300 international students are enrolled at Gujarat University.
The attack on foreign students occurred on March 16 when around two dozen people assaulted them for offering namaz during the month of Ramzan. Two students from Sri Lanka and Tajikistan were hospitalized as a result of the incident.
