Gunmeet Kaur Bindra appointed as first female principal of Daly College

April 8, 2022

In a recent turn of events, Gunmeet Kaur Bindra was elected as the first female principal in the history of the 150-year-old Daly College in Madhya Pradesh. Following a recent complaint that was lodged with the Registrar Firms and Societies, the Board of Governors chairman Narendra Singh Jhabua and his son Jai Singh Jhabua were barred from entering the institution. The current principal Neeraj Kumar Badhoutia was also banned from extending his service.

The new principal Gunmeet Kaur Bindra will be in charge for five years. At present, Ahmed Ansari will be the in-charge of the college.

An alumna of Calcutta University and the Delhi School of Economics, Dr. Gunmeet Bindra was appointed the first woman principal of a Top 10 ranked all-boys boarding school — Welham Boys, Dehradun (WBS, estb.1937) in 2012. She served there for eight years during which the school was ranked #1 under the parameter of leadership for four years consecutively by EducationWorld.

Bindra started her career as a senior commerce teacher at Sheiling House, Kanpur (1987-92) and served a short stint at the top-ranked DPS, R.K. Puram, Delhi, before she was appointed headmistress of the Wendy High School, Kanpur for a five-year term in 1993. Subsequently, in a career of over three decades in primary-secondary education she has served as headmistress/principal of several high-profile schools including DPS, Kalyanpur (1998-1999), Apeejay School, Faridabad (1999-2001), founder-principal of DPS, Jalandhar (2002-2005), founder-principal of the Mayor World School, Jalandhar (2005-2007) and principal of the Vidya Devi Jindal School, Hisar (2007-2011)

After the new Board of Governors was formed, Vikram Singh Panwar of Dewas royal family  has been elected as the president and BJP MLA from Narsinghgarh Rajyavardhan Singh has been elected as the vice-president.

According to sources, Satbir Singh Chhabra had complained to the Registrar Firm and Society in Bhopal that the Chairman of the Board of Governors Narendra Singh Jhabua had appointed his son Jai Singh Jhabua in the Board as parents’ nominee through unfair means. A constant dispute was going on due to this and in turn, academic work and the environment of the college was getting affected. Several notices were served and finally Jai Singh was asked to be removed.

On Wednesday, a Board meeting was called where Vikram Singh Panwar was elected as the president and Rajyavardhan Singh was elected as the vice-president.

The usual tenure of a principal in the college is five years. Badhotia had completed this term. A section of the college was in favour of giving him an extension, while the other section was angry with his strictness, including the college’s alumnae.
