The Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery (IIGJ) is set to establish a campus in Guwahati, with an agreement signed on Monday.
This agreement was reached between the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Limited (NEHHDCL) and the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).
IIGJ aims to bring its expertise in skilling to the Northeast, assisting in the implementation of the PM Vishwakarma initiative, which provides specialized training and business development support to artisans and entrepreneurs, according to NEHHDC advisor Sriparna Barua.
IIGJ CEO Debashis Biswas stated that the partnership will create a specialized center in the region, offering industry-relevant skilling and training to local artisans and entrepreneurs.
The NEHHDC, operating under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), is committed to supporting artisans and weavers through initiatives that preserve cultural heritage and promote sustainable development.
IIGJ currently has five campuses located in Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Varanasi, and Udupi, providing degrees, diplomas, and professional certification programs. The Guwahati campus will emphasize PM Vishwakarma and other short-term training programs.
