Harnessing the power of youth in shaping the future

Saisha
-Tanya Valecha, Principal, Rustomjee Cambridge International School & Junior College

The youth are often referred to as the hope for the future, and rightly so. They bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and unbridled enthusiasm to address pressing issues that impact society.

Sayuja Jejurkar and Dhan Shah, Grade 10 students of Rustomjee Cambridge International School, are prime examples of how young individuals can actively contribute to making a positive impact in their community. Through their collaboration with the Saisha Foundation, they demonstrate that age is not a barrier to initiate change and empower others.

Saisha Foundation: Knitting Hope and Spreading Love

The Saisha Foundation is an organisation comprising avid and experienced crocheters and knitters. Their mission is to create handmade breast prosthesis for women who have undergone mastectomy, offering them comfort, confidence, and a sense of normalcy after their challenging journey with breast cancer. Affectionately referred to as “knockers”, these prosthesis are thoughtfully crafted with care and compassion.

The Heartwarming Beanie Project

In addition to the knockers, the Saisha Foundation also engages in the creation of beanies for children under the age of 12 who are undergoing chemotherapy. These young warriors face tremendous physical and emotional challenges, and the beanies provide them with warmth and support during their treatment. The Saisha Foundation’s dedication to providing these knockers and beanies for free ensures that those in need can access them without financial burden.

Sayuja and Dhan’s Journey with Saisha Foundation

Sayuja and Dhan’s partnership with the Saisha Foundation began as a part of their Global Perspectives project. Deeply moved by the stories of breast cancer survivors and the struggles faced by children undergoing chemotherapy, they were eager to make a difference. With the guidance of their teachers, they organised events and awareness campaigns within their school, reaching out to teachers and aunties to provide vital information about breast cancer and the invaluable support offered by the Saisha Foundation. Sayuja and Dhan exemplify the potential of youth-driven initiatives in creating widespread awareness. Armed with the power of social media and word-of-mouth communication, they managed to engage their peers and educators alike. The impact of their campaign was felt beyond the walls of their school, as their message of hope and compassion spread to the broader community, inspiring others to contribute and support the cause.
