Holiday declared for Bengaluru schools following heavy rainfall

– Reshma Ravishanker

Schools in Bengaluru have been declared shut on Monday owing to the heavy and incessant rainfall in the city. Colleges, however, continue to function as usual.

In view of the heavy rains lashing the city since Saturday day night and a similar prediction for Monday, Bengaluru Urban deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha declared a holiday for all schools and anganwadis.

The decision to close schools was announced early on Monday morning. Parts of the City around Manyata Tech Park, Kengeri, RR Nagar and other areas have been inundated following the heavy downpour over the weekend.

Institutions will work on Saturday or Sunday to compensate for the loss. Degree colleges, postgraduate institutes, diploma and engineering colleges remained functional.

Even as the deputy commissioner announced a holiday early Monday morning, some school buses had commenced plying as official communications did not reach schools on time.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru with a forecast of heavy rains with thunderstorms in the city on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
