Holiday for schools and colleges as heavy rains lash Karnataka

As heavy rains lash parts of western ghats and coastal areas in Karnataka, a holiday has been declared for schools and colleges.

In Kodagu district, a holiday has been announced for schools and colleges on Friday in view of the heavy and incessant rains. Students of Pre University (PU) colleges, schools and Anganwadi centres were instructed not to come to campus as heavy rains lashed this part of the state.

As good showers were seen in catchment areas, the inflow of water to Harangi dam increased considerably.

In an incident of rain wreaking havoc, the roof of a Government Higher Primary School building at Kalathmadu in Virajpet was damaged after a huge tree fell on it at Virajpet taluk. The Napoklu-Bhagamandala road was inaccessible with nearly two feet waterlogging on the road.

Meanwhile even coastal Karnataka received heavy rainfall. Holiday was declared for Udupi district’s schools and PU colleges. Parts of Kundapura,  Baindoor, Brahmavar taluks as well reported very heavy rainfall.

“Widespread moderate to very heavy rains are likely over Coastal Karnataka. Scattered to widespread very light to moderate rains with isolated heavy rains are anticipated over the Malnad districts,” the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Committee report read.
