The Himachal Pradesh University Teachers’ Association (HPUTA) is intensifying its demand for raising the retirement age of university faculty from 60 to 65 years to bring policies in line with University Grants Commission (UGC) standards. They argue that this adjustment would reduce disparities faced by state university faculty when compared to those at central universities, IITs, and NITs, where 65 is standard. The association believes this change is crucial for retaining experienced educators, enhancing the university’s research capabilities, and maintaining academic excellence. They emphasize that experienced faculty are essential in mentoring students and enhancing the university’s research output and reputation.
Alongside the retirement age increase, HPUTA is calling for faster implementation of the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) for promotions, which is a vital part of professional growth for faculty members. Currently, delays in promotions under the CAS have reportedly affected morale and faculty engagement. HPUTA also highlighted the inconsistency in retirement age across various institutions within Himachal Pradesh, such as the Atal Medical and Research University and Himachal Pradesh Technical University, which have set the retirement age at 62. The association plans to bring this issue to the attention of the Himachal Pradesh government, stressing that retaining qualified professors is essential for the university’s sustained development.
HPUTA members argue that aligning retirement policies with UGC guidelines would create a more competitive academic environment, encouraging teachers to engage in research, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing activities crucial for students’ growth. Additionally, they believe such steps will contribute to building a strong educational reputation for the university, enabling it to attract more qualified students and faculty. The association plans to continue advocating for these reforms with both university administration and state government officials.
