Recently, a picture of a girl in Hyderabad went viral for peeking inside a government school classroom while standing outside with an empty bowl. Fortunately, this has resulted in her getting admission in the same school. The girl can be seen standing outside in hopes of getting leftovers from lunch. It prompted one person to come forward to ensure the girl is enrolled in the school and get a mid-day meal regularly.
Originally published in a Telegu daily with the title ‘Aakali Choopu‘ – meaning a hungry look, the photo was clicked at the Deval Jham Singh Government High School in Gudimalkapur. The girl named Divya is the daughter of a garbage collector and sweeper residing in a nearby slum. She, apparently, visited the school daily during the mid-day mealtime.
The photo caught the attention of Venkat Reddy, the National Convenor at MV Foundation, an NGO that works for the girl child rights. He shared a picture of the girl and said it was a shame that the girl couldn’t exercise her right to education and food. He further coordinated with his NGO to ensure the girl is granted admission to the school.
He also shared a photo of Divya’s first day at school, along with her parents, wherein she can be seen wearing a school uniform.
