Just days after the Karnataka state government undid the textbook revisions introduced by the previous BJP government, it has now posted an IAS officer at the helm of affairs.
An IAS officer, Subha Kalyan, has been appointed as the head of the Karnataka Textbooks Society to oversee its functioning.
Effectively, this means that Raghuveer, who was the director of the society, has been removed from his post.
According to officials in the department of school education and literacy, the IAS officer was also recently appointed in-charge of the mid-day meals programme.
“We are yet to hear the reason behind the appointment of an IAS cadre in that post. Previously, it was a candidate recruited through the Karnataka Public Service Commission. She was first placed in concurrent charge of the post of Director of Public Instruction (Mid-Day Meal) on June 3. Later, she was given the additional charge,” said a source.
Officials at the education department said that the decision was taken as a slew of changes had to be introduced. “The previous director had to make presentations backed by statistics which were not handled efficiently. Also, the state government is of the opinion that an IAS officer is to be at the helm of affairs as the revision is done and these circulated to schools.
So far, the newly appointed Siddaramaiah-led government has introduced 18 changes in Kannada and Social Sciences state board textbooks that are proposed to be circulated in the form of additional study material to schools.
