The results of 2023 ICSE (Class X) and ISC (Class XII) examinations were announced on Sunday and Gerry Arathoon chief executive and secretary of Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) said performance of students in both the exams have improved throughout the country this time compared to previous years.
Though principals of several schools said the results showed a marginal dip in students’ performance in ISC compared to last year.
In ICSE the all- India pass percentage is 98.94 per cent this time and in ISC 96.93 per cent students cleared the test this year.
Five students have stood first in ISC scoring 99.75 per cent marks. In ICSE nine students topped the exam scoring 99.8 per cent.
For the ISC candidates, this was their first board examination because in 2021 when the same batch was in Class X, no board exam was held due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This year was also the first full-length examination that students appeared in after three years following the outbreak of the Covid.
According to Arathoon, in last three years’ exams, students had to be assessed under a different scheme and the council returned to the normal format this year.
“ The exams were held in normal format for the first time this year after 2019. The 2023 results show an improvement in performance of students in both the exams compared to 2019 when the two board exams were conducted in the normal format for the last time. This trend is evident all over India. The council is pleased to see that the students, particularly the Class XII batch have done well,” Arathoon told EducationWorld.
In 2022, both ICSE and ISC examinations were divided into two semesters and the syllabus too were divided into two parts. Students had to write two exams.
The 2023 results show that in ISC, the Southern region has the highest pass percentage – 99.20 per cent followed by the Western region having a pass percentage of 98.34 per cent. The pass percentage in North is 96.51 per cent and 96.63 in East in ISC.
The Southern region also has the highest number of girl candidates in ISC as well as ICSE, Arathoon said.
In ISC, schools in the Western region have performed the best where the pass percentage is 99.81 per cent in ICSE followed by the southern region where the success rate is 99.69 per cent in the same exam.
Girls have performed better than boys in both the exams.
As many as 237, 631 candidates appeared in ICSE and 98,505 in ISC this year.
