On Monday, the Supreme Court of India addressed the contentious issue surrounding the NEET-UG 2024 medical entrance exam, expressing serious concerns over the alleged leakage of its question paper. The bench, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, underscored the widespread dissemination of leaked exam content through social media channels such as Telegram and WhatsApp, describing it as spreading “like wildfire.”
Emphasizing the importance of maintaining the sanctity of such critical examinations, the court asserted that if the integrity of NEET-UG 2024 has been compromised due to these leaks, it may necessitate a re-test. This stance comes amidst heightened scrutiny and public outcry over irregularities reported in the exam held on May 5.
The bench also raised concerns about the unprecedented number of candidates scoring a perfect 720 out of 720 marks in the results announced by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Such anomalies have led to suspicions of unfair advantages gained through leaked question papers or other malpractices.
The Supreme Court is actively hearing multiple petitions related to NEET-UG 2024, including appeals alleging paper leaks, OMR sheet manipulation, impersonation, and other forms of cheating. The court’s deliberations are crucial as they determine the future course of action regarding the examination and its outcomes, impacting the aspirations of thousands of aspiring medical students across the country.
