The Indian Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University (IIT BHU) Varanasi has made significant progress in this year’s QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings (WUR) 2024. The institute, which was placed in the 651-700 band last year, has achieved an individual ranking position of 571, marking its entry into the top 600 universities worldwide, according to the renowned QS rankings.
One of the notable factors contributing to IIT BHU’s improved ranking is its performance in the citation per faculty (CPF) parameter. The institute has secured the 78th rank globally in this category, a substantial jump from its previous position at 115. Within the Indian institutes evaluated by QS, IIT BHU has secured the 7th position for citation per faculty, highlighting its strong research output.
According to official data, IIT BHU has published an impressive total of 9,240 Scopus-indexed papers in the domains of Engineering and Technology, Natural Sciences, Life Sciences and Health, and Arts & Humanities between 2017 and 2021. These publications have garnered a remarkable total of 92,822 citations, excluding self-citations, between 2017 and 2022.
Expressing his congratulations, Pramod Kumar Jain, Director of IIT BHU, commended the faculty members and research staff for their significant contributions to the field of research. Jain emphasized the institute’s commitment to enhancing its domestic and global rankings, mentioning the initiation of various academic and research collaborations with international universities and research organizations. He affirmed that IIT-BHU will continue to work diligently to improve its performance in regional and global rankings in the future.
The much-anticipated QS World University Rankings 2024, marking its 20th edition, will be released today. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISC), Bangalore, are expected to secure the top three positions among Indian universities, with rankings of 149th, 197th, and 225th, respectively.
QS, a prominent ranking agency, evaluates over 1,400 institutions worldwide based on various factors such as academic reputation, employer reputation, research impact, and internationalization. The first edition of the QS global university rankings was published in 2004, and it has since become a respected benchmark in the education sector, alongside its competitor, Times Higher Education.
