The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati has launched four new courses from the 2019-20 academic session. These include three international programmes and M Tech in Data Science with Gifu University, Japan. The courses are International Joint Master’s Degree Program in Food Science and Technology, International Joint Ph.D. Program in Food Science and Technology and International Joint Ph.D. Program in Integrated Mechanical Engineering. These programmes have been initiated due to rising demand and interest of students in these subject areas.
Regarding the introduction of these courses, T.G. Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati explained, “We believe that the four newly launched programmes will be a trendsetter academically and a game-changer professionally. We look forward to collaborating with top world universities in such unique programmes. The new curriculum is designed keeping in view diversity of the students, frontier interdisciplinary areas and emphasizing on the foundational subjects. The focus of the programmes is on the study, invention, and creative use of technologies to create effective, usable, entertaining experiences with technology through interdisciplinary research in engineering, design, behavioral and social sciences, and to understand the impact of technology on individuals, groups, and organisations. The institute envisions to produce successful graduates who will be capable of leading the changing scenarios of tomorrow through innovation, in-depth thought, and values.”
As part of the joint International agreement between the two IIT Guwahati and Gifu University, four Japanese students have been enrolled for the program in April 2019 and will be visiting IIT Guwahati, India for six months. On a similar way, four Indian students have enrolled for this program and will be visiting Gifu University for six months next year. The courses, laboratory work, and projects for the program will be taught jointly by the faculty members of both the varsities.
Besides the introduction of these courses, IIT Guwahati has also introduced bachelor’s and master’s in design this year, which has attracted a lot of candidates.
