PW invited parents of Beansprouts Pre-Primary, Malibu Towne, Gurugram to share how they encourage their preschoolers to follow good hygiene habits
“Integrating good hygiene practices into children’s daily routine from youngest age works best. Although my son Arshaveer (class II) has learnt the basics of personal hygiene and cleanliness, I continue to offer him a variety of coloured aromatic soaps to choose from to make washing up seem like a fun activity. I personally maintain high standards of hygiene. Over time, I expect he will learn to do the same” – Yaminii Puri, admission counselor, Modern Montessori International, Gurugram
“My first lesson on personal hygiene to my son Shivaay (class II) was to help him understand why good hygiene practices are important. They reduce the risk of illness and disease. I ensure routinely follows good hygiene habits such as washing hands frequently, covering his mouth when coughing or sneezing, bathing regularly, remembering to change his underwear and brushing teeth at least twice a day.” – Bhawana Jain, pre-primary teacher, Beansprouts Pre-Primary
“Children learn by observing their parents. Therefore, we must lead by example. With my children — Advika and Akshaj (class II) — we started early on the task of incorporating good hygiene practices into their daily routine and educating them about the impact on their physical and mental well-being. We used fun methods such as providing them colourful soaps, toothbrushes and hand towels supplemented by visual aids to demonstrate the importance of good hygiene. We also take them for regular dental and health check-ups” – Cheshta Nassa, finance executive, Ciena India Pvt. Ltd
“Lessons in personal hygiene for children at youngest age goes a long way in building their self-confidence and personality. Bearing this in mind, I ensure my daughter Navika (class II) follows basic hygiene protocols like washing hands with soap for at least 20 seconds before and after meals, after returning from school, and after using the washroom. I also ensure that she starts and ends the day with brushing and flossing her teeth and having a warm water bath”– Kanika Chaddha, Senior Research Fellow, Jamia Hamdard University, Delhi
