The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A) was founded in 1999 as a centre of excellence in information technology and computer science by the Government of India. It is one of the nineteen Indian Institutes of Information Technology listed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The institute was conferred the “Deemed University” status in 2000. In 2014 the IIIT Act was passed, under which IIITA and four other Institutes of Information Technology funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development were classed as Institutes of National Importance. The beautiful 100 acres campus is situated at Deoghat, Jhalwa designed meticulously on the Penrose Geometry pattern by a mathematics professor Roger Penrose.
The 100 acre campus at Deoghat, Jhalwa has been designed by a mathematics professor, Roger Penrose. The campus hosts two computer centres with six labs each, 16 lecture halls, electronic library and a residential campus. It also houses a state-of-the-art auditorium and facilities for sports and extracurricular activities including a sports field, basket ball and tennis courts and a student activity centre for indoor games. Other facility offerings include a 40-room air-conditioned guest house and staff residences for senior professors and other staff.

IIIT-A has a well-managed training and placement cell to guide students towards learning proper industry knowledge. The institute organises active placement drives every year, bringing in the best companies from various sectors to recruit graduating students and has shown an upwards trend in the highest package and the average package offered to the students with every passing year. The highest number of recruitments is done in the information technology sector. The students from all degrees and courses are given equal opportunities to appear in the placement drive. In addition to placement opportunities, IIIT-A also offers summer internship opportunities to students which can go up to 4-6 months paid internship with the top companies and institutes.
Recent placement highlights- 2020: A total of 120 recruiters participated in the 2020 placement drive, top recruiters among them being Google, Amazon, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Adobe and VISA. A placement percentage of 96% was recorded, with the highest CTC being INR 43 LPA and the average CTC being INR 20.83 LPA.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked IIIT-Allahabad 103 among engineering colleges in India in 2020. It was also ranked 10 by India Today in 2020 and 18 by Outlook India in 2019.
There are separate hostels for men and women with capacity for 240 and 60 students respectively. Hostel facilities include computers and internet access, 24 hours power backup, meals, and indoor and outdoor games.
