Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a public institution of higher education located in Bangalore. It was established in 1909. It acquired the status of a deemed university in 1958.
In 2011, IISc was the only Indian institute ranked by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, at 301–400 overall. It was also ranked 49 in Chemistry and 76–100 in Engineering/Technology and Computer Science. In the QS World University Rankings it was ranked 142 in Natural Sciences, 96 in Engineering & IT and 188 in Life Sciences, with no overall ranking.

The institute library (JRD Tata Memorial Library) is regarded as one of the best scientific and technical libraries in India. It boasts an exhaustive collection of more than 1,97,000 books, 2,15,000 volumes, 13,000 online books and several e-resources.
IISc Bangalore offers M.E./M.Tech, B.Sc., M.Sc., B.E./B.Tech and Ph.D. courses in several disciplines. It also offers Master of Design (M.Des) and Master of Management Studies (MMS) courses.
