Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi) is a public technical and research university located in Hauz Khas in South Delhi. It is one of the oldest Indian Institutes of Technology in India. Established as College of Engineering in 1961, the Institute was later declared as an Institution of National Importance under the “Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963” and was renamed as “Indian Institute of Technology Delhi”. It was then accorded the status of a Deemed University with powers to decide its own academic policy, to conduct its own examinations, and to award its own degrees. In 2018 IIT Delhi was also given the status of Institution of Eminence (IoE) by Government of India which granted almost-full autonomy. Since its inception, over 48,000 students have graduated from IIT Delhi in various disciplines including engineering, physical sciences, management and humanities and social sciences, of which nearly 5070 received Ph.D. degrees. IIT Delhi alumni today work as scientists, technologists, business managers and entrepreneurs and many have taken to administrative services, active politics or work with NGOs. In doing so, they have contributed significantly to building of this nation, and to industrialization around the world.
Campus
The IIT Delhi main campus spans 325 acres in Hauz Khas, South Delhi, with Sonipat and Jhajjar being the two satellite campuses. The campus is a world of its own with gardens, lawns, residential complexes and wide roads. The campus has its own water supply and backup electricity supply along with shopping complexes to cater to the daily needs of residents. The IIT-D campus is divided into four zones:
- Student Residential Zone
- Academic Zone that includes department offices, lecture theatres, libraries and workshops.
- Student Recreational Area, that includes the Student Activity Center (SAC), football stadium, cricket ground, basketball courts, hockey field, lawn tennis courts and swimming pool.
- Faculty and Staff Residential Zone.

The placement procedure is as follows:
- Final year students appearing for placements are given professional training by the IIT Delhi Training and Placement Team which organises training sessions.
- The IIT Delhi placement office incites companies to participate in the annual placement drive, who must send relevant information and credentials to the placement team.
- Companies fill out the Job Notification Form (JNF) or Training Notification Form (TNF) on the basis of which students can apply accordingly.
- Participating companies are then allocated interview slots. The recruitment procedure is conducted and companies select suitable candidates for placement.

Admission
Undergraduate Admission- B.Tech. Selection Criteria: JEE (Main and Advanced) score/rank Eligibility: 10+2 with PCM from a recognised board. Admission Procedure:
- Candidates must apply online for IIT Delhi and register for JEE entrance by filling the application form, submitting required documents and paying the application fee, and appear for the JEE Main and Advanced exams.
- After qualifying JEE Advanced, candidates should register for JoSAA counselling on the JoSAA official website.
- To secure admission into IIT Delhi, candidates may choose IIT Delhi as their first preference during choice filling in the counselling process. After allocation of seats, candidates may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying the fees.
- Candidates must register for GATE by filling the application form, submitting required documents and paying the application fee, and appear for GATE exam. Candidates clearing GATE must submit an online application on the official IIT Delhi website.
- After qualifying GATE, candidates must secure the required cut-off to be eligible for a seat in IIT Delhi.
- Candidates securing the cut-off must register and appear for the counselling process for choice filling and locking and seat allocation. After allocation of seats, candidates may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying the fees.
- Candidates must apply online for IIT Delhi and register for IIT JAM (for M.Sc. in physics, chemistry and mathematics)/COGJET (for economic and cognitive sciences) by filling the application form, submitting required documents and paying the application fee, and appear for the entrances.
- Candidates shall be shortlisted based on marks secures in IIT JAM/COGJET. Economic and life sciences applicants will be invited for an interview round.
- Candidates with IIT B.Tech. degrees or valid JAM/GATE/CSIR/JRF/NET scores need not appear for the COGJET entrance.
- Shortlisted candidates then appear for the counselling process for choice filling and locking and seat allocation. After allocation of seats, candidates may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying the fees.
- Candidates must register for CEED by filling the application form, submitting required documents and paying the application fee, and appear for the entrance. Candidates clearing CEED must submit an online application on the official IIT Delhi website.
- Candidates shall be shortlisted based on marks secures in CEED. This is followed by an interview round.
- Based on marks secured in CEED and the interview, IIT Delhi will release a merit list and waiting list. Candidates offered seats may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying the fees.
- Candidates must apply online for IIT Delhi and register for CAT by filling the application form, submitting required documents and paying the application fee, and appear for the entrance.
- Candidates meeting the minimum CAT cut-off will have to appear for an interview round.
- Candidates will be shortlisted based on marks secured in CAT, performance in the interview, academic merit, work experience and other factors. Candidates offered seats may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying the fees.
- Candidates must apply online for IIT Delhi and register for GATE/NET by filling the application form, submitting required documents and paying the application fee, and appear for the entrance.
- Admission is based on GATE/NET scores and performance of the candidate in the interview. The management may conduct further tests or interviews to shortlist candidates.
- Candidates offered seats may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying the fees.
Achievement
QS World University Rankings ranked IIT Delhi 185 internationally in 2022, 43 in Asia in 2020 and 18 among BRICS nations in 2019. It was ranked 401–500 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2020, 67 in Asia and 38 among Emerging Economies University Rankings in 2020. IIT Delhi ranked first among government engineering colleges in India by India Today in 2020. It ranked second among engineering colleges by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2020 and third overall.
