Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati is a public technical and research university established by the Government of India, located in Guwahati, in the state of Assam in India. It is the sixth member of IIT fraternity. It has been ranked 7th both in Engineering and Overall category in NIRF India Rankings 2020. At present the Institute has eleven departments and five inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati’s campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city.
Research at the institute spans the full range from the highly theoretical to industry focused, covering traditional physical sciences as well as newer disciplines like nanotechnology, biotechnology and artificial intelligence.
IIT Guwahati gains 41st rank the ‘research citation per faculty’ category in QS World University Rankings 2022.
IIT Guwahati’s 74,000 square metre Academic Complex houses the academic departments, centres, their laboratories, classrooms, etc. A spacious Administrative Building accommodates the offices of the Institute. The Computer and Communication Centre houses a modern Computer Centre and Central Library. A lecture hall complex with four lecture halls, each capable of seating 250 scholars and an auditorium of 1500 capacity provide space for teaching and holding various events/programmes.
Department of Design advocates high quality design research and scholarly activities. It comprises a Product Engineering Lab, Print and Multimedia Studio, Animation Research Lab, Visual Communication Studio and Design and Technology Management Lab.

Placement
Centre for Career Development (CCD) of the Institute centrally handles all aspects of campus placements for the graduating students of all Departments.
The graduates at Department of Design(DoD) successfully manage to get recruited into the top corporations every year. Some job profiles held by the Alumni of DoD over the past years covering a whole spectrum of specialisations are Software Engineers, Exhibition Designers, Product Designers, User Interface Designers and Usability Engineers, Business Management Analysts, Media Consultants and Producers.

Undergraduate Admission
Entrance Exam: Candidates are required to clear both JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams to qualify for the undergraduate programme.
Eligibility: Candidates must secure a minimum of 75% marks in 10+2 board exam with physics and mathematics as compulsory subjects.
For admission in BDes programme candidate should have a valid score for the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) conducted by IITs and also have to pass the qualifying examination (Class XII or equivalent) with physics, chemistry and mathematics as subjects.
Candidates are selected on the basis of JOSAA Counselling where the candidates are required to register themselves and allotted seats on the basis of their rank, availability of seats, and category of applicants.
Postgraduate Admission –
M.Tech — Entrance Exam: Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)
Eligibility: BE/ BTech or a Bachelor’s degree in an allied discipline from a recognised university/ institute
MDes — Student applying for post graduate (M.Des) programme should qualify the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) conducted by IITs as a part of their central admission procedure. It follows a three tier selection process as given below:
M.Sc – Qualifying exam JAM. BSc or any bachelor’s degree in allied discipline with 50% marks
Postgraduate and Research Admission: Ph.D programmes
To get admission in PhD programmes in Design candidates need to apply against admission announcement that are advertised every six months in national newspapers and on the IITG website. The admission processes will consists of a seminar /presentation of a topic of the candidate’s choice but related to Design. Candidates are also encouraged to present portfolios/projects/work experience that may have a bearing on their research interest. This presentation will be followed by a formal interview/test covering fundamental and advanced topics in Design related issues.
Dual MTech+PhD in CSE: B.E. or B.Tech. degree or equivalent in any discipline other than Computer Science and Engineering or Information Technology with a minimum CPI of 7.0 out of 10 or minimum 70 of marks.
Having valid GATE score in any GATE Examination Paper
Mathematics: MSc/ MTech in Mathematics with minimum 60% aggregate
Humanities & Social Sciences: MA in allied discipline with a minimum of 55% aggregate
Scholarships
All regular candidates with GATE/CEED score are entitled to scholarship and will have to perform teaching /lab assistance duties in addition to pursuing their research.

For BTech/BDes programmes yearly fee is Rs.1,49,530.
IIT Guwahati is internationally ranked #395 and secured the 41st rank globally in the ‘Research Citations per Faculty’ catergory in QS World University Rankings 2022.
In India, among engineering colleges, it ranked 6th by India Today in 2020 and 6th by The Week overall in 2019. It was ranked 7th among engineering colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020.
IIT Guwahati provides residential accommodation for its students. It has 11 hostels, of which two Dhansiri and Subansiri are exclusively for women. Also, married scholars’ hostel comprises of around 170 rooms accommodating married PhD scholars and Master’s students. I
Every student at IIT Guwahati is given a separate room. All the hostels provide mess, canteen, juice center, stationary shop, library, TV room, sports room (for indoor sports), and laundry facilities.
