Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is one of the leading institutes of the country in higher technological education, basic and applied research. It is a residential institute with nearly 550 faculty, 9700 students and 1250 administrative & supporting staff in a self-contained campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 620 hectares. It has established itself as a premier centre for teaching, research and industrial consultancy in the country.

IIT Madras offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees across 16 disciplines in Engineering, Sciences, Humanities and Management with nearly 100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern of functioning.

The placement office is the nodal point of contact for companies to interact with IIT Chennai. The office is well equipped and is designed to smoothly handle and support the placement process at all stages. Infrastructure for pre-placement talks, written tests, group discussions and personal interviews are available.

Internationally, IIT Chennai was ranked 271 in the QS World University Rankings 2020 and 50 in the QS Asian University Rankings 2020. 

It was ranked 601–800 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2020, 125 in Asia and 63 among Emerging Economies University Rankings in 2020. IIT Madras also ranked first among engineering colleges by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2020 and first overall.

Campus

Spread over 620 acres in Chennai, IIT Madras provides residential accommodation for its students, faculty, administrative and supporting staff, and their families. The residential houses employ private caterers. The self-contained campus includes two schools (Vanavani and Kendriya Vidyalaya), three temples (Jalakanteshwara, Durga Peliamman and Ganapathi temple), three bank branches (SBI, ICICI, Canara Bank), a hospital, shopping centers, food shops, a gym, a swimming pool, cricket, football, hockey and badminton stadiums. Internet is available in the academic zone and the faculty and staff residential zone. Internet is available in the hostel zone from 2pm till midnight and from 5am to 8am.

Academics

IIT Madras offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees across 16 disciplines in engineering, sciences, humanities and management. About 360 faculty belonging to science and engineering departments and centers of the institute are engaged in teaching, research and industrial consultancy.

The departments and centers of the institute are responsible for the academic activities which include teaching, research and industrial consultancy.

The courses of study are organized on semester programs and each semester provides for a minimum of seventy instructional days. The medium of instruction is English. Continuous evaluations are conducted by the faculty, a consequence of the autonomous status granted to the Institute. Research work is evaluated on the basis of the review thesis by peer examiners both from within the country and abroad. Ordinances in respect of the academic program of study are prepared by the senate, the highest academic body within the institute.

Placements

  • Students may register for placements for one academic year only (in the month of August), through the IIT Madras Training and Placement Office. Each registered student will be given a Placement Registration (PR) number to access the placement notices, company announcements and upload resumes. The registration fee is non-refundable.
  • Companies which have offered the highest number of pre-placement offers include Microsoft (12), Goldman Sachs (9), Qualcomm (10), American Express (9), and Texas Instruments (12).
  • Placements for AY 2020-21: IIT Madras began its 2020-21 placement drive from December 1, 2020, witnessing the participation of 22 companies making a total of 123 offers in the first session (Dec 1). Over 186 PPOs were offered, bypassing the previous year’s total of 170. Within a week of the 2021 placement drive, a total of 725 placement offers were bagged by the students.
  • The highest CTC offered was INR. 82.5 LPA in the B.Tech. programme and 88.82 LPA for M.Tech.
  • The average CTC was INR. 18.1 LPA for the B.Tech. programme and INR. 15.34 LPA for the M.Tech. programme.

Admission

Undergraduate Admission (B.Tech and Dual Degrees) and M.S

  • Entrance Exam– Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) or JEE Advanced: students need to enroll in both JEE (Mains) and JEE (Advanced)
  • Eligibility- Applicants should have completed 10+2 from a recognized board with 75% (65% SC/ST) secured in the qualifying examination.
  • The Engineering programmes require a high school background in Maths, Physics and Chemistry and the Biology/Biotechnology programmes require a high school background in Biology.
  • Procedure- On securing AIR (all-India rank), counselling invitations are sent followed by enrollment to Joint Seat Allocation counselling process (JoSAA). Seat allotments are based on the college cutoff and the candidate’s preference of courses and colleges. The registration and choice filling of JoSAA generally begins from the third week of June in online mode.

Postgraduate Admission: M.Tech and M.S

  • Entrance Exam– Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)
  • Eligibility- UG degree in science, engineering or related disciplines with 60% marks or 6.0 CGPA (SC/ST 55% or 5.5 CGPA).
  • Procedure- Cutoffs/date of suitability/interview will be announced by IIT Madras. Offers for the first set are made on the COAP portal which candidates must accept or reject within the stipulated date.

Postgraduate Admission: M.Sc/post-B.Sc programmes

  • Entrance Exam– Joint Admission Test to MSc (JAM)
  • Eligibility- A minimum three-year UG degree in sciences such as Maths, Physics and Chemistry from a UGC recognized university with 55% or 5.5 CGPA (50% for SC/ST or 5.0 CGPA).
  • Procedure- Enroll and appear for JAM test, followed by securing an all-India rank (AIR), appear for JAM counselling followed by three rounds of admission.

Postgraduate and Research Admission: M.S (by research) and Ph.D programmes

  • Entrance Exams- GATE/UGC-NET/JRF 
  • Eligibility- Masters degree in science/technology/engineering degree with 60 % or 6.0 CGPA (55 % or 5.5 CGPA for SC/ST) 
  • Procedure- Submitting applications (available as anytime application programme), followed by a test and interview process. (Test may be waived for meritorious applicants).

Postgraduate Admission: 5-year integrated MA programmes

  • Entrance Exam- Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE) (IIT Madras specific exam.)
  • Eligibility- graduate from any public school/board/university examination in India/foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities.
  • Procedure- The test is completely computer based and is usually conducted in the second or third week of April in various cities across India. 

Postgraduate Admission: B.Sc. in Programming and Data Science

  • Qualifier process comprising four weeks of instruction in Computational Thinking, Mathematics, Statistics and English.

Postgraduate Admission: MBA

  • Entrance Exam- Common Admission Test (CAT)
  • Eligibility- Graduate/professional degree with 60% (55% for SC/ST) from UGC recognized university. For sponsored applicants, a minimum of two years of work experience is also required.
  • Procedure- Apply and appear for CAT exam, register for MBA admissions. Applicants will then be evaluated on written ability, personal interview, composite score and other achievements.

Fees:

The fee varies from course to course. A B.tech student needs to pay approximately Rs 26,500 for tuition and hostel. A day scholar for the same course has to pay Rs. 31,500. An MBA hosteller needs to pay approximately Rs. 59,000 while the day scholar pays Rs. 64,000.

All hostellers have to pay the approximate fee of Rs 16,000 to the hostel offices.

Accommodation

IIT Madras provides residential accommodation for its students, faculty, administrative and supporting staff, and their families. Most students at IIT Madras reside in the hostels, where extracurricular activities complement the academic routine. The campus has 18 hostels, of which four, Sharavati, Sarayu, Sabarmati and Tunga are exclusively for women. Dining facilities are provided in three centralised halls namely Nilgiri, Vindhya and Himalaya. The hostels may accommodate undergraduate and graduate students, though they tend to keep the two apart.

Students are assigned to hostels at the time of admission, where they usually spend their entire stay at the institute. The residential houses employ private caterers. Internet is available in the academic zone and the faculty and staff residential zone. Earlier, internet was limited in the hostel-zone from 2:00 pm till midnight and from 5:00 am to 8:00 am, but increasing demand during the academic semester led to full day Internet service.
