Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT Roorkee/IITR) is a public technical and research university located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand and is headed by Director Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi.
Established in 1847 in British India by the then lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason, it is the oldest technical institution in Asia. It was formerly known as University of Roorkee (1949-2001) and Thomason College of Civil Engineering (1847-1949), and was granted university status in 1949 and was converted into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in 2001, thus becoming the seventh IIT to be declared.
IIT Roorkee has 22 academic departments covering Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences and Management programs with a strong emphasis on scientific and technological education and research. IITR houses a total of over 8000 students, with an academic staff strength of 514.
IIT Roorkee has a main campus sprawled over 365 acres in Roorkee, a Saharanpur campus spanning 25 acres offering courses in Polymer Science, Process Engineering, Paper Technology & Packaging Technology, and an additional 10 acre campus in Greater Noida, Knowledge Park II (inaugurated on 4 April 2011) housing 16 lecture rooms, software laboratories, faculty offices, a library and a computer center.
The campus comprises hostels for student accommodation where extracurricular activities such as midnight cricket tournaments, early morning bakar sessions, community computer warfare complement the academic routine. The campus has 16 hostels, of which two (Sarojini, Kasturba) are occupied by girls. The campus has a new co-ed hostel, Vigyan Kunj. Hostels may accommodate undergraduate and graduate students along with doctoral students. Students are assigned to hostels by the school administration after their freshmen year. There are nine hostels for married students, doctoral students and foreign students. Each bhawan has a mess. Mess administration consists of a staff advisor, a chief advisor, and a student mess secretary.
IITR houses clubs and indoor which include seven Billiards & Snooker Tables, Carrom boards, Chess boards, Table Tennis facilities and a Foosball table as well as outdoor sports facilities for 14 sports: badminton, athletics, rowing, tennis, swimming, hockey, cricket, squash, gymnastics, football, basketball, yoga, volleyball, kho kho, table tennis and weight lifting.
Other campus facilities include hangout places such as cafeterias and mulit-activity centres, banks, a post office, the aarohi child care centre and playgroup, railway reservation counter, the institute hospital, places of worship and security to ensure safety of students.

The IIT Roorkee placement cell trains students to become industry-ready professionals and compete at the global level. IITR has built a mutually beneficial relationship with recruiters, creating a vast recruiter network which helps students get placed in prestigious corporations. With a 70+ years legacy and training given to students in their specialisations, IITR encourages students to develop their technical, managerial and leadership qualities.
Summer internships ranging from one-two month periods provide training in reputed organisations for undergraduate students. Graduate students undergo a longer six to 12 month industry research project. The IITR placement and internship cell emphasises on developing the institute industry partnership, and the alumni network with their global reach is testimony to the institution and IITR placements.
Recent placement highlights- 2020-21: IITR recorded over 650 student placements with 265 participating companies during the placement drive in December 2020. Nine international job offers were recorded. The highest CTC stood at INR 69.5 LPA. Top recruiters included Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and Bajaj Auto Ltd.
