In a recent alarming incident, an Indian IT student faced a brutal attack by unidentified individuals near his residence in Chicago, USA. In a video shared on social media, Syed Mazahir Ali can be seen being pursued by three men on the night of February 4. Another video shows Ali with a bloodied nose and face, describing the attack.
Having moved to the US from Hyderabad six months ago for his Master’s in information technology at Indiana Wesleyan University, Ali was targeted as he walked home, with one assailant even pointing a gun at him. Surveillance footage captures the assault, revealing that Ali was punched in the eye and struck on the face, ribs, and back. He was subsequently treated at a local hospital for multiple cuts and bruises.
Expressing his trauma, Ali, whose dream was to pursue studies in the US, stated, “America has been my dream country, and I came here to fulfill my dreams and pursue my Master’s. The incident gave me trauma.”
As investigations continue, the Consulate General of India in Chicago has engaged with Ali and his wife, Syeda Ruquiya Fatima Razvi, offering all possible assistance. Ali’s wife has sought support from External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to travel to the US with their three minor children.
This incident follows the tragic death of 25-year-old Indian student Vivek Saini, who was fatally attacked with a hammer in Georgia, and underscores concerns about the safety of Indian students studying abroad.
