Indian student enrollments at educational institutions across Ireland have grown by over 50% making Indian students the largest international student population in Ireland, a study found.

International enrolment in Ireland is at an all-time high of 40,000 students in the 2023/24 academic year, according to a report by ApplyBoard.

The report has been generated based on insights from Ireland’s Higher Education Authority (HEA). The trend is perceived to be an indication of shifting preferences and the country’s increasing appeal as a study abroad destination.

The report indicates enrollment trends, top student populations, and the fields of study driving this growth.

The country saw a 15% increase in student enrollments as compared to the previous year. Growth was seen at both undergraduate (+8%) and postgraduate levels (+25%).

Among the most sought-after areas of study are Health and Welfare, Business, Administration and Law, Arts and Humanities, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), Engineering, Manufacturing and Construction, Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, Social Sciences, Journalism and Information, Education, Generic Programmes and Qualifications, and Services were the most popular fields of study among international students in Ireland in 2023/24.

“The International enrolments in ICT programs soared by 65%, making it the fastest-growing field. If this trend continues, ICT could soon become the most popular field of study for international students, aligning with Ireland’s strong demand for tech talent,” according to ApplyBoard.

Several factors influence the decision, according to ApplyBoard. “Ireland’s affordability, high employability rates, and the two-year post-study work visa for master’s graduates are making it a compelling alternative to destinations like the US, UK, and Canada. For Indian students, the country’s thriving tech sector, world-class education, and diverse fields of study further enhance its appeal,” they said.
