Indian students in the US grew by 62% compared to 2021, finds study

In 2023, Indian students were the largest student population in the US, with a total of 199,861 study permits issued (including F, M and J) student visas according to a recent study.

ApplyBoard, the technology platform for international student mobility, revealed that Indian students received more student visas than any other market in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the US in 2023.

The data reveals that the interest in the US is rising sharply among Indian students. The US hosted 53% more Indian students in 2022-23 than the year before.

This was the highest YOY growth for India since 2000. Based on current trajectories, Indians will surpass Chinese students as the #1 student population in the US in 2023-24, the study says.

According to the US Department of State’s Monthly Data, over 130,000 F-1 student visas were issued to Indian students in 2023. This was the second year in a row Indians received more US student visas than students from any other country.

Meanwhile, India also saw an 14% increase in F-1 student visas issued last year, and for the second year running, Indian students were issued the most F-1 visas by a very wide margin. (among countries with 1,000+ F-1 student visas issued).

Analyzing the data on US student visa approvals ApplyBoard, said that in 2023, US issued around 446,000 F-1 student visas, an 8.5% increase from 2022’s 411,000 visas issued. This was the highest number of student visas issued in a single year since 2016.
