Jadavpur University, Kolkata – an autonomous state university – was founded on December 24, 1955 by the Government of West Bengal with support from the Government of India. Jadavpur University is semi-residential and operates out of two urban campuses – one in Jadavpur spread over 58 acres and another one in Salt Lake spread over 26 acres. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in a variety of humanities, science, and engineerinf and technology streams.
The university aims to promote higher education by linking up traditionally separate subjects in the light of the ever-changing global scenario; to explore new dimensions of academic administration free of bureaucratic impediments and to set up a role model for academic leadership.
JU also has other institutes like the Jawahari Devi Birla Institute of Commerce and Management, Jadavpur Vidyapith and the Institute of Business Management. These institutes operate in independent campuses and have their own independent curriculum as well as examination systems but the final degree is offered by JU.

Campus facilities include a well-stocked digitalised central library, while each department has its own departmental library, multiple auditoriums such as the Gandhi Bhavan and Rabindra Bhavan auditorium, composite buildings for the arts, social science and science departments, teachers’ and officers’ quarters, the expansive open air theatre (OAT), a sports centre and large sports ground. Hostel facilities are also provided to students.

Jadavpur University Training and Placement (T&P) cell functions as an interface between the students and the recruiting companies. The T&P cell organises annual campus recruitment activities such as workshops, interaction with alumni and personal training programmes with its partnered companies as well as industries. The T&P cell facilitates the placement drives by inviting various corporations to participate in recruitment drives. Among all the departments, engineering students are the most recruited in the placement drives.
2020 placement highlights: Out of 770 registered students, 647 were placed thereby securing 84% placement percentage. The highest CTC recorded in 2020 was INR 52 LPA, while the average CTC stood at INR 19.96 LPA. Some of the top recruiters were from Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Wipro, Tata Mechanics and Reliance.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework has ranked Jadavpur University 17th among engineering institutes in India in 2020, 12 overall and fifth among universities.
Internationally, Jadavpur University acquired a rank of 651-700 by the QS World University Rankings 2021, 136 in Asia in 2020 and 75 among BRICS nations in 2019.
Jadavpur University is also lauded for the work of the Jadavpur University Press (JUP), publishing all documents of record in the university including PhD theses, question papers and journals. The JUP launched its first two titles translated from original Italian on 1 February 2012 at the Calcutta Book Fair- Rajpurush (translation of Niccolò Machiavelli’s Il Principe) translated by Doyeeta Majumder and Shilpachinta (translation of selections from Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks) translated by Sukanta Chaudhuri.
There are 13 (four for girls and nine for boys) hostels with provision for accommodating over 1600 students (977 boys students and 655 girls students). The hostel mess is operated by the Students’ Mess Committee under the guidance of the superintendent of the respective hostel.
At the main hostel complex, the ladies hostel complex and beside the old P.G. hostel, there are private canteens supervised by the students’ committee. The main hostel complex is situated outside the campus. The university also offers an exclusive hostel for research scholars.
