A third-year undergraduate student of English at Jadavpur University was declared dead after being taken to a nearby hospital in an unconscious state on Thursday evening, a senior university official confirmed.

The student was discovered lying unconscious beside a water body on the campus after spending time with her classmates. She was rushed to a private medical college and hospital by fellow students and university staff but was declared dead on arrival.

The university authorities have not disclosed the student’s identity. Senior officials, faculty members and representatives of the Arts Faculty Students’ Union visited the hospital. The local police station was also informed, and officers were sent to the hospital.

The circumstances of the incident remain unclear. The tragedy comes two years after the death of a first-year Bengali honours student at the university, who fell from a hostel balcony in an alleged ragging incident that sparked widespread outrage and arrests.
