JGU stated that the programmes provide academic exposure and cultural immersion across diverse themes including governance, technology, heritage and sustainability.
Vice Chancellor Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar said the expansion reflects the university’s goal of strengthening global engagement. He noted that Japan’s position in innovation, governance and sustainable development makes it a significant destination for academic collaboration.
India–Japan relations have recorded growing cooperation over the past decade, supported by high-level engagements since 2014. Recent developments include the 2023 visit of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to New Delhi and the 2025 signing of the Japan–India Joint Vision for the Next Decade during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, which emphasised academic partnerships and student exchanges.
Against this diplomatic backdrop, JGU has expanded its academic presence in Japan, establishing more than 25 institutional partnerships, including with the University of Tokyo, United Nations University, Chuo University, Doshisha University, University of Yamanashi, Ritsumeikan University and Hiroshima University. The university’s first ST-SAP in Japan was held in 2025 in partnership with Temple University Japan, sending a cohort of 40 students.
Professor Padmanabha Ramanujam, Dean of Academic Governance, said the new programmes were designed to uphold academic standards and support interdisciplinary learning across key areas. Professor (Dr.) Akhil Bhardwaj, Vice Dean and Director of the Office of International Relations and Global Initiatives, added that the initiatives support JGU’s long-term vision for global mobility and cross-cultural learning.
