A Jammu and Kashmir students’ association wrote to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday, urging immediate “proactive measures” to ensure the well-being of Indian students in Kyrgyzstan. This appeal follows recent mob attacks on foreigners in Bishkek, raising safety concerns.
The association highlighted that Kashmiri students are “waiting to return home” after the incident. Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Kyrgyzstan reported that the situation in Bishkek remains calm. The embassy is coordinating with local medical universities to facilitate transport for Indian students to the nearest international airport.
Ambassador Arun K. Chatterjee met with Indian medical students at the International Higher School of Medicine in Bishkek on May 22. Embassy officials also visited Indian students at Royal Metropolitan University as part of their outreach efforts.
The association’s letter expressed that many Kashmiri students and their parents are anxious following the troubling events. The letter emphasized the urgency of evacuating Indian students from Kyrgyzstan to prevent further distress or potential harm. It called for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to collaborate closely with the Kyrgyz government and diplomatic missions to ensure the students’ safe passage.
The Indian Embassy assured that the situation in and around Bishkek is stable and flights to India are operational. The embassy is in contact with medical universities in Kyrgyzstan and urged students to reach out for assistance via provided contact numbers.
