Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) issued a comprehensive advisory on Monday, appealing to the student community to remain vigilant and actively contribute to “peace and harmony” on the campus grounds. This advisory, released late in the evening, coincides with the recent notification of the rules for the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) by the Central government, just ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
While the advisory did not explicitly state its connection to the Centre’s recent move, it emphasized the importance of maintaining tranquility on campus, particularly in light of the ongoing student election process and various events organized by student bodies. The administration, through the advisory, reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to adopting a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of violence or indiscipline within the campus premises. All stakeholders were earnestly urged to abstain from engaging in any activities that may disrupt the peaceful environment.
It’s noteworthy that university campuses in the national capital had experienced protests in December 2019, with a section of students demonstrating against the CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), urging the central government to revoke the law. During this period, universities such as Jamia Millia Islamia became the epicenter of these protests, witnessing police actions against the agitating students.
The recent notification of the CAA rules on Monday reignited protests, particularly at Jamia Millia Islamia, prompting a significant police deployment on the university premises to maintain law and order.
