Karnataka: 25 private varsities warned not to sideline department officials

The department of higher education, Karnataka has slammed 25 private universities statewide for non-involvement of officials of the department in their board of governors meeting.

In a letter addressed to these private varsities, Nandakumar B, under secretary to the government, higher education department said that the State Government is cognizant of the fact that most of the Private Universities have the practice of not inviting the Principal Secretary or Secretary to the Government, Higher Education Department to the meetings of Board of Governors and of conducting the meetings of Board of Governors. Hence they have been kept out of it. 

“The fact that Board of Governors is the statutory authority of the Private Universities established in the State by the Acts enacted by the State Legislature and the Principal Secretary/Secretary to the Government, Higher Education Department, Government of Karnataka is the ex-officio member of the Board of Governors as provided in relevant section of every such Act.

“The Government has no tolerance towards discourtesy shown by not inviting the Principal Secretary/Secretary to the Government, Higher Education Department to meetings of Board of Governors and such Private Universities are hereby admonished for violation of statutory provisions of the Acts establishing them,” the letter reads.

Among the varsities are Vidyashilp University, RV University, Sharana Basava University, CMR University, Garden City University.

 The department has thus directed all Private Universities to “scrupulously adhere to the hard and fast provisions of the Acts establishing them and unfailingly invite the Principal Secretary/Secretary to the Government, Higher Education Department and other ex-officio members to the meetings of Board of Governors well in advance.”
