Karnataka: 3 key education portfolios in Siddaramaiah’s cabinet. Here’s who got it

After much deliberation and debate over who would be handed over key portfolios in the Siddaramaiah-led congress government in Karnataka, 24 MLAS took oath as ministers on May 27.

Among them are those candidates who are loyalists of chief minister Siddaramaiah while the others stood by deputy chief minister D K Shivakumar while the two locked horns for the post of the chief minister.

Among them, three key portfolios for education have been handed over to S Madhu Bangarappa, Dr M C Sudhakar and Dr Sharanprakash R Patil, the latter two being postgraduates in dentistry and medicine.

Brief profiles of candidates:

 

S Madhu Bangarappa

Minister for Primary and Secondary Education

Educational Qualification: BA (Bangalore University)

S Madhu Bangarappa is an MLA from Sorab constituency in Shivamogga district. He is the only MLA from the state’s Malnad region to be given a ministry in the Siddaramaiah-led congress government in Karnataka.

The 57-year-old is a two-time MLA and comes from a political family. His father S Bangarappa was the former chief minister of the state. Two criminal cases are pending against him.  

 Besides, Madhu Bangarappa also has a close association with the film industry. An actor and producer himself, Bangarappa is also the brother-in-law of well-known Kannada actor Shivarajkumar.  

He succeeds BJP’s B C Nagesh.  

 

Dr M C Sudhakar

Higher education

Educational Qualification: Postgraduate, Dental Surgeon MDS (Prosthodontics), A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore University

54-year-old Dr Sudhakar is an MLA from Chintamani in Chikkaballapura district. This dental surgeon has no criminal cases pending against him. He has made it to the legislative assembly for the third time.

He will succeed Dr C N Ashwath Narayan.   

 

Dr Sharanprakash Rudrappa Patil

Medical Education and skill development

Educational Qualification: MD (skin and VD), M R Medical College Kalaburagi

A dermatologist by qualification, the 55 year-old is an MLA from Sedam constituency in Kalaburagi district.

Dr Patil also previously held the portfolio of the minister of medical education in the Siddaramaiah’s congress government in Karnataka.

He will succeed Dr K Sudhakar.
