Karnataka: 61.88% students pass second PU exams

As many as 4, 22, 966 students, which is 61.88% of the total number of students to appear for pre-university board exams have passed, minister for primary and secondary education, BC Nagesh said. 

Releasing the results in Bengaluru on Saturday, Nagesh said, among the freshers, 67.14 % students cleared exams this year. As many as 6.83 lakh students appeared for the second PU exam that was scheduled in April-May 2022. 
 
This year’s results have it that the rural students outdone urban students. Among the streams, the highest pass percentage is among science students at 72.53%. The pass percentage among boys is 55.22% and higher among girls at 68.78%.
 
Among the districts, Dakshina Kannada (88.02%),  Udupi (86.38%) and Vijayapura (77.14%) have highest pass percentage across Karnataka. 
 
Securing a 594 on 600 arts stream student Shweta Bhairanagiwda has secured the highest in her stream. She is a student of the Indu Independent PU college in Ballari. Among the Science students, Simran Sesha Rao from RV PU College in Bengaluru has topped the stream while Neelu Singh from BGS PU College, Bengaluru has secured 596 on a score of 600 and has stood first in Commerce. 
 
As many as 29,020 students remained absent for second PU board exams this year according to data provided by the department of pre university education. It maybe recollected that the board exams in Karnataka happened just months after the Hijab controversy rocked the state. 
 
Some students in Karnataka’s Udupi district had also said that they would not write exams if Hijab was not permitted and also had not appeared for practical and preparatory exams. 
 
The minister however, categorically denied that Hijab could be the only reason. He said that department has no knowledge on how many stayed away from the exams because of the hijab issue. Later, the PU department director said that it could be attributed to health concerns or discontinued education.
