Karnataka: New academic year to begin from July

The Karnataka primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar said that the new academic year in schools would begin in July. He also added that the current year will be extended till May 2021.

Kumar said, “We already announced SSLC exams will not be held before May end. So, the academic year will continue till then. Some learning must happen before students take exams.” With the exception of class 10, the assessment would be done at the school level on the basis of continuous and comprehensive evaluation.

Regarding the reopening of schools for primary grades this academic year, the education minister said that it will depend on how the Covid-19 technical advisory committee perceives the situation.

The reopening of preschools and daycare centers this year would depend on the women and child welfare department.

The schools for classes 10 and 12 were reopened on January 1, 2021. However, Class 6 to 9 students from rural areas would resume their continuous learning by means of the Vidyagama program.

Meanwhile, colleges in Karnataka are set to resume offline classes from January 15 for students of all undergraduate, postgraduate, engineering and diploma classes, deputy chief minister of higher education, Dr C N Ashwath Narayan said on Monday.

“The final year offline classes are already underway successfully. The classes of first, second and third year students will start from January 15,” Narayan told media sources at the sidelines of a meeting with the officials.
