Her consistent efforts paid off when the class 10 (SSLC) results were announced in Karnataka on Thursday. Ankita Basappa Konnur, a student from a government-run school in the state was the only candidate to secure a perfect 100 percent score.
Hailing from a humble background — her father a farmer and mother, a homemaker — this brilliant girl’s success in the boards came as no surprise to her teachers and family. All throughout, she has remained a topper in school. Ankita is a student of the Morarji Desai Residential School, Mudhol, which is run by the Directorate of Minorities, Government of Karnataka.
“My parents and teachers were delighted. I was able to achieve this feat because of my consistency. Nothing can be achieved if one starts studying at the last minute. I would read for 2-3 hours a day without fail. That is what made a difference,” Ankita said.
This topper said that she had no pressure from the family to score high and that it was passion that drove her to study well.
“Upto January, I ensured that my studies were directed at me having a strong foundation. Conceptual understanding is most important. My teachers have been very supportive and solving model papers helped me. Being in a residential school was a boon. I did not have distractions like the mobile phones” she said.
Ankita aspires to be an IAS officer. “It is a childhood dream for me to be able to clear civil services. I will pursue science in PU and prepare for civil service exams going forward,” she said.
Lauding her efforts, Vinayak Mantur, her teacher at school said that Ankita has aced exams since grade 6. “She was never an average student studying to pass exams. She took genuine interest in consuming knowledge. A hostel resident, she has a disciplined schedule. She was always off to bed by 10 pm and up by 5 am to study. We were sure she would top the state but the fact that only she did was a surprise for us,” he added.
Mantur said that four other students of this unassuming school secured over 600 marks. “We treat students just like they do in private schools. Locals are supportive. Resource persons are easily accessible and willingly train students. All our teachers are happy to spend time with students even after school hours. That helps students get an extra push.”
