Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Kanpur admitted its first batch of students in 1965. The school began its academic endeavors from two bungalows granted to it by IIT-Kanpur, with Shri. D S Bajpai as the founder principal and 60 students on its rolls. Today the school has more than 1,700 students and offers classes from primary to class XII. The school is affiliated to the Delhi- based Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and is a co-educational, English medium school.
KV, IIT-Kanpur enjoys a good reputation for academics, literary activities, games and sports.
Far from the hub of the industrial city, Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Kanpur, is located within the sprawling IIT-Kanpur campus in the outskirts of the city. The school building is naturally airy and well-lighted with open spaces. Its location within the campus of one of India’s premier institutes of technology not only motivates and influences students, but it also instills in them a competitive attitude.
The school has 45 classrooms, 3 science labs for physics, chemistry and biology, 3 computer labs and a well-stocked library. The school has facilities for indoor games and outdoor games with a football ground, basketball court and lawn tennis court.
IIT-Kanpur also allows the school to use its lecture theatres and conference halls as and when required to host conferences and other programmes.
There is also an Herb Garden and a Mathematical Garden on campus.
The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, and prepares students for the board examinations conducted by it at the end of class X and XII.

Extracurricular education
The school places emphasis on co-curricular activities and offers art and music, dance and various activities like calligraphy, creative writing, rakhi-making, extempore speech, quiz etc. Sports and games such as chess, swimming, kho-kho, hockey, athletics, throwball, lawn tennis, badminton, cricket, basketball, and gym are encouraged.
Students also get to participate in outdoor activities through the Scouts and Guides groups.

The age criterion is 5 years for class I. No admission test is conducted for admission to class I to VIII as it is based on category system. If applications are more than the number of seats, lottery system is followed in each category, including the single girl child quota.
Children of staff members of IIT-Kanpur are given first priority in admissions followed by children of Central government employees.
For class IX, an admission test in Hindi, English, maths, social studies and science is conducted and a merit list is prepared. Admission will be granted in order of merit, following the sequence of the categories.
